Gracing the ever busy Cleveland Street, RK San is bringing a modern take to Japanese fare while still keeping the most important and traditional aspects alive and kicking.

We were treated to this delicious feast by Executive Chef Rk Tamang who has worked at some impressive restaurants including opening Chef at One & Only Reethi Rah Maldives, Sokyo The Star Sydney, Head sushi at Flying Fish and executive chef at Sake restaurant, Geisha Haus and Sabu parramatta.

We treated ourselves to a Friday night dinner and weren’t disappointed. We started the night with a traditional favourite, only this wasn’t so cliche. Covered in a spicy seasoning and bonito flakes this was a great way to get our taste buds fired up.

Chicken, Pork and Vegetable Dumplings

These dumplings came to the table steaming and wafting aromatics good enough to make you drool. Each dumpling was full of fresh fillings and came with a scrumptious dipping sauce.

Cigar $10

What an ingenious little dish this was. Sashimi grade diced tuna is filled into a pastry shell, then sitting in a Malto Ash with spicy mayo. All this accompanied with saké shot for a full baller experience.

20 Piece Chef Selection Fresh Sashimi $39

Finally some sashimi and WOW what a dish. Set in an ice bowl, this delicate sashimi platter shows what Japanese food is all about. Not only should it taste great but it should be beautiful. Like a work of art, and as you can see this certainly is. The sashimi was extremely fresh and an absolute treat to eat.

Kingfish Carpaccio $16

Next up was this freshly sliced kingfish with moreish char garlic dressing, micro coriander and seedless chili sticks for a light touch of heat.

Karaage Chicken $12

Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, with just the right amount of spice. Like little meat popsicles, we couldn’t get enough of them.

Eshpuma Shot $6

Finally we ended with this gorgeous little mix – berry eshpuma with vanilla anglaise sauce. Whipped and aerated, this was light as air yet still full of flavour.

All in all a fantastic night at RK San. The quality and ingenuity of the fare is evident in each dish. Perfect for a night out, this little Surry Hills eatery will wow you.
